Four answers a marine works job actually needs.

Not a list of tools — the questions a dredging or reclamation contract asks every week, and how the suite answers each one.

How much material, and on which side of the design?

Draw a section or a polygon and the volume is split where it matters: what stands above the design surface and what is still missing below it, as two separate figures rather than one net number that hides both.

  • Volume inside a polygon, between any two surfaces or against a design
  • Above and below the design reported separately, with the areas shaded on the section
  • As-built beyond the design footprint counted or excluded — your call, stated on the sheet
  • PDF volume report with the zones listed

Is the bed inside tolerance — and where is it not?

A difference chart against the design or a previous survey, coloured by your own table, so over-dredge and shortfall read at a glance and the same sheet goes to the client.

Can the sections be on the desk before the concrete?

Chainage along the route or a line drawn anywhere, cut through every loaded surface at once. Each sheet frames itself on its own design plus a margin, so the structure fills the page instead of sitting in a corner of a fixed box.

Are the soundings clean before anything is built on them?

Spikes are removed where they still are — in the raw swath, not after gridding, where a bad ping has already spread into the surface and the volume.

  • Reads the raw acquisition logs directly

Three programs, one project folder.

They read the same folder and hand work to each other, so a line cleaned in the morning is in the volume report that afternoon — no export step in between.

Measured, not claimed.

Survey software earns trust the way a survey does: by being checked against something that did not produce it.

Checked by the software that will receive it

Every design written here is opened in the field package and read by its own check routine. Its error list is the score — not our own counters, which were wrong the one time we trusted them.

Nothing is invented

Triangles read from a file are written back exactly as they came. No welding of near vertices, no filling of excluded regions, no phantom faces where the design has a gap on purpose.

The 0.01 mm rule

On a design surface no repair may reach further than a hundredth of a millimetre. Three attempts to be cleverer than that made the errors worse, and all three were rolled back.

Light does not survive the water column. Sound does — and so does a measurement you can reproduce.

BATHYON is built and used by a working hydrographic surveyor on live dredging and marine-works quality control in Dubai. Every feature in it exists because a survey needed it that week: a groyne that had to be sectioned before the concrete, a volume a client would sign, a design a contractor's software had quietly broken.
